Twelve Days of CADD Care (Day One): Tool Palette Management in Civil 3D

Having the out-of-the-box Tool Palette path in your Profile will always make any new Palettes get saved to the hard drive. But if you remove that path temporarily and re-add it, you lose all of the great Palette groups, making them more difficult to work with. The trick is to make a separate Profile just for creating custom Tool Palettes that only points to your desired shared drive, create/build your desired Palettes, then add the shared path back to the original profile once you’re done.
