For the first time in their 44 year history, the Washington Capitals are Stanley Cup Champions! Defeating the Vegas Golden Knights with an intense game five victory, the Caps are, to the excitement of the CADD Microsystems team, bringing the Stanley Cup home to our hometown of Washington D.C.!
To celebrate, we’ve assembled some of our favorite Autodesk ReCap(s) tips & tricks – ALLCAPS style.
Isolating Point Cloud Elements
Whether your model is an entire building, a floor, or just a room like a mechanical room, isolating point cloud elements is useful when analyzing a space. Once a group of points is isolated from the rest of the model, that group can be saved as a separate point cloud for future use. Once separated, that group can be inserted into other design software so the user can view how the equipment would look in a new space.

Modeling with Point Cloud Models
One of the biggest reasons why point cloud models are generated is to use them in design software. A popular software to use is Autodesk Revit. However, inserting a large point cloud model can really slow down your computer and Revit. Here are some tips to help you utilize the model and make your modeling efforts more efficient.
- Isolate just the area you are looking to model by using the same method outlined above.
- Generate section views to show only the areas you want to model from.
- Use reference planes to help you generate model elements and their placements.
- Move your level datums to the elevations you need them to be for the model. A point cloud model will not come in with levels pre-defined.
- Use ReCap to view the point cloud model quickly but use Revit to generate the modeling. This will make it easier for you to see what is going on in the point cloud and relate that to what you need in the Revit model.
ReCap has a feature to generate a model based on pictures. Here, I will outline a few quick tips. First, take as many pictures as you can. The more the better. For example, to generate a point cloud model of a desk, I would take anywhere from 40-80 pictures of as many angles as I can. ReCap photo requires many pictures to generate a good model. Second, the area will need to be well lit. The idea is that you can see as much detail as possible in each photo. Lastly, use a camera with greater than 12mp quality. This will help you in the long-run when generating a model.
