Making an Impact: Volunteers at the DC Central Kitchen

Allen LevyJune 23rd, 2015

On Monday, June 8, a team of CADD Microsystem employees set out to make a difference at the DC Central Kitchen, assisting with meal preparations for the next day. CADD employees have been supporting local charities and the community through the CADD Foundation since its founding in 2013, and the DC Central Kitchen was their most recent stop.

The 16 volunteers went through an orientation, donned their aprons and jumped right into prepping at different stations. Each station had an assigned chef (graduates of DC Central Kitchen’s own Culinary Job Training Program!) showing them the ropes. CADD employees were busy chopping celery and carrots, preparing chicken, and mixing and rolling dough. Part of the process is also portioning finished meals for the next day. Each day, the DC Central Kitchen delivers about 5,000 meals to homeless shelters and clinics, AND serves about 6,300 scratch-made healthy meals in low-income schools. That’s a whole lot of food!

One of the Foundation’s goals is to give back to the local community of its three offices. Employees have made an impact by collecting warm winter coats for shelters, providing holiday presents for children through the USO Elf program, and sponsoring a school supply drive. Donations have been made to the Special Olympics, the American Cancer Society, and to the recovery effort of a local survivor of the Boston Marathon bombing.

There are many ways to get involved with the DC Central Kitchen’s volunteer program, so check it out! Interested in finding out more about CADD Foundation and getting involved? Click here.
